The two sections comprising this monograph neatly divide Cooper’s life and the corresponding phases of his work, which was so heavily influenced by his immediate surroundings: his earlier life as an East coast artist, when he was primarily focused on his iconic skyscraper paintings and sweeping urban street scenes, and the later, West coast phase when Cooper was based in Santa Barbara, California and concentrated on bucolic landscapes and introspective garden scenes. The authors dwell at length on the influence of his frequent trips to Europe and to such exotic locations as India, where Cooper painted his first architectural subjects.
