In his early career Gilbert Munger was lauded in America and Europe for his work that at first depicted majestic views of the West in a detailed, topographical style and later, after time in France, focused on softer views painted in the Barbizon style. His European work sold well in France and Britain, and earned him critical praise and several medals and awards. By the time of his death in 1903, after returning to the US, however, his work was almost forgotten. This insightful critical study, based on extensive original research and illustrated with numerous paintings from all phases of the artist's career, endeavors to re-introduce Munger to collectors and re-establish his artistic status. This book will also fascinate anyone interested in 19th century history and the growth of America.
